project brief

LSG Drilling mobilized to Bradley Lake in 2026 as a subcontractor to Discovery Drilling, supporting geotechnical core drilling operations associated with the Bradley Lake Expansion Project near Homer, Alaska. The remote project site is located in rugged mountain terrain and requires helicopter access for personnel and field support. LSG crews are performing core drilling to help provide subsurface information required for the engineering and continued development of the project. The broader Bradley Lake Expansion Project is being advanced by the Alaska Energy Authority in partnership with the Railbelt utilities and is designed to increase water storage and renewable hydropower generation from the existing Bradley Lake Hydroelectric Project.

Field Execution

The challenge

Operating in the mountains above Bradley Lake presents a very different set of challenges from a conventional road-access drilling project.

The remote location, rugged terrain, changing Alaska weather, and helicopter-dependent access require careful coordination of personnel, equipment, supplies, and field operations. Once crews are on site, drilling operations must remain productive while working within the logistical limitations of a remote project environment.

LSG’s role is to provide dependable drilling execution in those conditions — supporting quality core recovery, responsive field operations, and close coordination with Discovery Drilling and the broader project team.

The Bradley Lake project demonstrates the importance of preparation, mobility, and experienced crews when access to the worksite extends well beyond conventional roads.

project goals

LSG Drilling is supporting Discovery Drilling’s geotechnical investigation work by providing field crews and core drilling capability in a remote, helicopter-accessed environment.

The primary operational goals include:

  • Perform geotechnical core drilling at designated investigation locations

  • Support reliable recovery of rock core for subsurface evaluation

  • Maintain safe and productive drilling operations in remote mountain terrain

  • Coordinate field activities closely with Discovery Drilling and project personnel

  • Adapt operations to changing ground, weather, access, and logistical conditions

  • Provide dependable field execution throughout the drilling program

the work

LSG mobilized crews to the Bradley Lake project area to support active geotechnical drilling operations at a site accessible by helicopter from Homer.

Working in a remote alpine environment requires each stage of the operation to be planned around access, transportation, equipment requirements, weather, and the needs of the drilling program. LSG crews are performing core drilling to recover subsurface rock samples that can be evaluated as part of the project’s ongoing engineering and geotechnical investigation.

The project is a strong example of LSG’s ability to combine experienced personnel, heliportable drilling capability, responsive field coordination, and remote project execution in demanding Alaska conditions.

It also demonstrates the versatility required to move from conventional exploration projects into specialized geotechnical programs where logistics and access are as important to successful execution as the drilling itself.
